Because psychotherapy and counselling are very much tailored to the individual, a whole range of approaches may be used, and as therapy unfolds, so the various techniques will emerge in an intuitive and organic way. Some of the techniques may include the following:

Supportive Therapy
Sometimes a person seeking help may simply need someone else to listen, rather than trying to change things. Sessions will provide space for exploration, encouragement and support.

Cognitive Therapy
This is a widely used model which aims to challenge and change negative thought patterns which contribute to depression, anxiety and other symptoms which interfere with daily life. Strategies may include: learning to monitor self-talk/ limiting beliefs; challenging your thinking; or recognizing there is a connection between thought, mood and behaviour.

Mindfulness-based Core process Therapy
Is a powerful way of accessing and transforming deeply held (core) and often limiting beliefs and behaviour patterns through a process of self-study. This is done via mindfulness techniques and various experiential exercises. Being mindful, in the moment, of the way we experience life via thoughts, feelings, internal and external sensations, movement, images etc. allows us to ‘step back’ from being in automatic pilot mode. This process of stepping back, or observing, helps us notice that change is occurring all the time. It also creates space for possibility and choice – for choosing to respond rather than simply reacting.

Both long-term and short-term therapy and counselling are available. An in-depth assessment at the start of therapy will give us both some idea of what may be required, but there is flexibility to adapt as the process unfolds.
